Sustainable Agriculture Foundation - Africa (SAF-A) is a non-profit legacy organization of the Syngenta Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture (SFSA). SAF-A will continue to improve farmer incomes and food security by providing smallholder-relevant innovations, helping farmers access these innovations through markets and addressing barriers in the agricultural agriculture value chain. Additionally, SAF-A will scale up the adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices and foster the empowerment of women, youth, and disadvantaged groups.

Message from Executive Director
The Sustainable Agriculture Foundation Africa (SAF-Africa) stands for a bold vision: A world where smallholders, communities, and nature thrive together. At the heart of our work is a deep connection to the grassroots. We walk alongside smallholder farmers, listening, learning, and understanding their realities. From this foundation, we co-create tailored, practical solutions that respond to their most pressing challenges—unlocking productivity, strengthening resilience, and restoring the health of our land. We believe transformation happens through partnership. By working hand in hand with governments, communities, and development partners, we are building a movement for sustainable change that is locally grounded and continent-wide in impact. Our ambition is clear: to reach over 1.5 million smallholder farmers by 2030, create meaningful livelihoods, and advance farming practices that restore ecosystems and secure the future of Africa’s food systems. This is more than a mission—it is a shared journey. Together, we can grow a stronger, more resilient, and more hopeful Africa.

Agri-entrepreneurship Development (AED)
Developing rural Agri Entrepreneurs (AEs) each serving between 150 and 200 farmers through a one-stop shop capable of offering all the agricultural needs of the farmers.
Climate Resilience and Inclusive Finance Solutions (CRIFS)
Designing, implementing, and scaling financial products and services that support smallholder farmers and agricultural communities in addressing the challenges posed by climate change.
Catalytic Intermediaries
The approach of scaling through catalytic market initiatives and entities that ensures sustainability of the initiatives.
Seed Systems Development
Catalyze access to quality, affordable, and climate-smart seed technologies for smallholder farmers through a unique variety commercialization approach with a goal towards better and resilient livelihoods using a multi-partnership approach.

The Gates Foundation Agriculture team has supported development of an online African Agriculture Adaptation Atlas, which is now publicly available with updates occurring throughout 2024 and 2025.
