This is a study focusing on analyzing key agricultural value chains in Kenya and Tanzania to promote Inclusive Agricultural Transformation (IAT) while leveraging new export opportunities through Africa-China agricultural cooperation. By targeting specific crop value chains, the initiative aims to benefit smallholder farmers by addressing their challenges, improving financial returns, and enhancing their role in export activities. Through comprehensive analysis, the project will identify knowledge and technology gaps, strengthen production and storage capacities, and design targeted interventions to unlock sustainable market potential. Ultimately, this approach supports smallholder farmers, fosters economic growth, and creates profitable market linkages.
Objectives:
To enhance the understanding of agricultural products in Kenya and Tanzania, including the crops that are already on China’s customs import permit list, as well as other potential crops.
Analyze the market for cassava, avocado, and dried red chili peppers in the main producing areas in relation to China’s investment in agricultural export projects in the countries mentioned, and it also includes an analysis of smallholders’ returns.
Analyze the requirements of smallholder farmers in the key regions for export, as well as the gaps, bottlenecks and constraints, and drawing recommendations for improvement
Key Activities:
A mapping of agricultural produce in Kenya and Tanzania with potential for export to China
A deep market research study for identified crops -Red Chilli, Cassava, and Avocado
Hold a forum in the two countries to discuss the findings of the study
A study tour for Chinese industry experts (e.g., cassava, and avocado experts) to visit Kenya and Tanzania to assess potential business
Achievements (so far):
Mapping Study completed
Analysis for Red Chilli, Cassava and Avocado on going
